CLA or Conjugated Linoleic Acid, is a relatively new supplement that more and more people are turning to in their effort to lose fat and gain lean muscle.  New supplements are scrutinized and until there is 100% definitive research, people will debate the validity of the claims.  CLA has been and is still being researched but so far has proven somewhat effective.  Is it a miracle pill? No.  Will it help get rid of fat without making you lose lean muscle?  Yes.  Here’s how it works.

CLA or Conjugated Linoleic Acid is an essential fatty acid.  You have probably heard of the Omega groups of acids (3, 6 and 9) and how healthy they are.  CLA is one of those acids.  It is essential and useful to the body and you can get a small amount from meats and certain dairy products.  Clinically, the CLA molecule acts on the PPAR in your body.  The PPAR (Peroxisome Proliferation-Activation Receptor) helps with cellular differentiation, development and metabolism. In layman’s terms, CLA boosts the metabolism of adipose fat through the PPAR.  This fat is metabolized and used for energy.  Sounds amazing, right?  Well it is except that people tend to want instantaneous results and they want those results to be huge.  That will not be the case with CLA but it will assist in using that unwanted fat for energy over time.

In a research study by the Scandinavian Clinical Research Group, they found that women taking the supplement for a year – with no exercise or eating habit changes – were able to lose 9% of their body fat.  So a year seems like a long time, especially when you are trying to get in shape today, but, the key to that study is that these women were not adopting any healthy habits to boost the results.  Imagine what they would have burned off had they been training and eating healthy.  Chances are it would have doubled their results.

Now that you know what it is and how it works, you’ll need to know what supplements will be the best for you.  Natural is always best, so be sure whatever brand you buy has at least 80% CLA for the best possible results.  Anything less will be a waste of time.  Remember, this is not necessarily a fast acting or overnight solution, so you will need to be sure what you are taking over this time period is as pure as possible.  Also, CLA is available in pill form and a syrup.  Most health food stores will carry only the pill form but if you search, you may find the syrup online, just be sure of it’s contents.  Too much sugar and you will be defeating the whole purpose.

As for what brands and types are the best, there are a few:

1)  Muscle Pharm CLA –  1000 mg capsules:

Manufacturers Product Description:  MusclePharm® CLA Core™ is a naturally-occurring fatty acid found in meat, diary, and safflower oil. Research suggests that this may help to reduce body fat and increase lean muscle by reducing fat cells’ ability to accumulate fat. MusclePharm® CLA Core™ is the highest quality, purity-and potency-conjugated Linoleic acid (CLA) available. It’s formulated to fit the fat-reducing, lean-muscle maintenance needs of an individual. When used in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise program.

2)  NOW CLA – 800 mg capsule:

Manufacturers Product Description:  NOW Foods CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) is a class of fatty acids produced by animals that is naturally found in beef and dairy products. Although CLA plays an important role in a number of cellular metabolic processes, humans are not able to produce CLA and therefore can only obtain it from the diet. Since CLA is generally more abundant in grazing animals, changes in agricultural practices have resulted in less CLA in our foods, decreasing its availability in modern diets. Therefore, using a CLA supplement is recommended to obtain desirable levels of CLA for its beneficial effect.

3) Tonalin – 1000mg capsules:

Manufacturers Product Description:  When you consume fat that your body does not need to use for energy, it is absorbed by fat cells with the help of an enzyme called lipoprotein lipase. CLA blocks this enzyme and diverts unused fat to your muscle cells. The CLA then activates another enzyme which helps your muscle to burn this fat, especially during exercise. That’s why, when used in balance with a healthy diet and regular exercise program, Tonalin® CLA is so effective in helping you lose body fat, and keep it off. Because it is so effective, Tonalin® CLA can also help eliminate the unhealthy “yo-yoing” pattern of losing and gaining weight. Clinical studies have proven that Tonalin® can prevent fat regain.

4)  Optimum Nutrition CLA – 750 mg capsules:

Manufacturers Product Description:  CLA or Conjugated Linoleic Acid is a group of fatty acids found naturally in eggs, dairy products and red meat, but not in appreciable amounts. Each ON CLA softgel contains Clarinol brand CLA providing a total of 750 mg of CLA and 700 mg of active isomers.

5)  MRM CLA 1250:

Manufacturers Product Description:  MRM’s Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) contains 1000mg of active cla per softgel. CLA is a naturally occurring free fatty acid commonly concentrated in both grass-fed meat and dairy products.  To gain benefit from naturally occurring CLA, a gross consumption of both meat and dairy would be required – with the potential side effects being elevated cholesterol and compromised cardiovascular system, as well as the addition of unnecessary fats and calories to the diet. MRM’s CLA 1250 is derived solely from safflower seed oil, to allow for precise CLA intake, and appropriate supplementation without the calories.  Make MRM’s CLA part of your healthy lifestyle of regular exercise and a balanced diet to help achieve your goals.
